McCaffrey to strengthen Clarins’ position in the US
Barry McCaff rey has been appointed to spearhead the opening of Clarins spa accounts within the hotel and day spa sector in the US. As director of sales for the spa division,
McCaff rey will be drawing on more than 20 years of experience. Most recently, he worked for Comfort Zone in the US, where he was responsible for its growth in corporate hotel and resort groups. McCaff rey says: “I’m thrilled to be
working with the team of experts at Clar- ins USA. Headed up by Jonathan Zrihen, CEO, there is a strong commitment to growth and development of this new channel for Clarins in North America.”
Rotating hotel and spa for Croatian island T e hotel will be located on a hillside olive grove and will rotate at a speed of 1.3 times per day
T e design for Europe’s fi rst rotating hotel, to be built on a hillside olive grove on Solta Island in Croatia, have been unveiled. Masterminded by Richard Hywel Evans
of Studio RHE in the UK, the multi-purpose resort – with a 120-berth marina – will be located 35 minutes by boat from Split. T e hotel sits at the centre of an infi nity-
edged swimming lake that cascades onto a hillside spa below. As it rotates, at a gentle speed of 1.3 times a day, guests will have a range of ever-changing views over the Adri- atic Sea, the surrounding countryside and the remains of a Roman fi sh farm.
T e Waterfall Spa will feature a water-
walled reception as well as fi ve treatment rooms that are surrounded by another shal- low lake. T e swimming pool will be roofed with refl ective aluminium wings. Hywel Evans says: “T is is a stunning
example of how exciting design can be. In the case of Solta Island, the need was simple: every guest should enjoy the breathtaking view and our design provides just that.” Studio RHE was commissioned by the
Croatian developer T e Profectus Group, which is currently in the fi nal stages of sign- ing off the project.
Spa opens at de Savary’s restored US mansion
A spa has been unveiled at Vander- bilt Hall – a 100-year-old mansion in Newport, Rhode Island, that’s been restored by hotelier Peter de Savary. T e intimate Vanderbilt Spa cov-
ers 3,160sq ſt (249sq m) and was designed by Newport Collabora- tive, a local group responsible for many other the historic renova- tions in the Newport area. T e spa’s opulent decor, featur-
ing silk runners and gilded mirrors, was overseen by spa director Alli- son Schumann. Schumann previously worked with de Savary at the US-based Carnegie Abbey Club and Cherokee Plan- tation properties. T ere are three treatment rooms, includ-
ing a duet room featuring built-in cabinetry, luxurious furnishings and a fi replace. Other facilities comprise indoor and out- door swimming pools, a sauna, a range of

AHLEI and ISPA’s online risk management for spas
The American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI), the International Spa Association (ISPA) and ISPA Foundation have released a new online course. Called Risk Man- agement for Spas, the course features a total of 10 modules and has been devel- oped in collaboration with the Resort Hotel Association. It is off ered through AHLEI’s distance learning department on its e-learning platform.
