WRITTEN by two of the world’s most knowledgeable turf academics ‘The Turf Problem Solver’ contains extensive information on turf pests, solutions and treatments. Professors A.J Turgeon and
J.M Vargas utilise contemporary case studies and technical expertise to educate readers of the most effective practices for tackling and avoiding turf problems. Contains practical, real life case studies, which are an entertaining method to inform and address turf problems. In particular this book offers excellent information on turf
problems involving the environment, climate, shade, moisture, etc. Cultural issues such as mowing, fertilization, irrigation, rolling and pesticide issues with weeds, diseases and insects are addressed in depth. There is also an extremely useful appendices section, which displays chemical names, maps, conversion charts, and calibration guidelines. This is a fantastic book by two men who have always shared
their expertise to help develop the British turfgrass industry. There is not enough contemporary turf related books of this quality available. When such books are produced more of us should sit back, take time to read, learn and ultimately improve the quality of the turf we produce. Tools Of the Trade THE LAWN DOCTOR
WHAT is it? The Lawn Doctor is a tool used to repair or sample turf profiles. There are various shapes and sizes, including hexagonal, but are generally steel, pyramid-shaped, hand held devices for cutting out a square of turf. The Lawn Doctor
removes damaged turf, allowing a similar sized new piece of turf to be inserted. Because of the deep extraction taken, repaired areas can be played on straight away. The tool is widely used on all types of fine sports surfaces, including golf, bowls and football.
The Lawn Doctor is also useful for examining your sward
profile for pest and diseases and monitoring root growth. How do you use it? The pyramid-shaped device has four blades that are hammered down into the turf with a mallet. The square of turf is then extracted and replaced by a new piece of turf, also cut with the turf doctor, and ideally having the same sward profile. The tapered shape of the turf produces a tight fitting, seamless repair. The smaller, hexagonal device can be inserted into the turf by using body weight, a mallet is not required. Extra care should be taken when using on heavy or dry soils as the blades could be damaged or misshaped. The lawn doctor is available from Pitchcare’s new Online
