ADR training - Are YOU ready?

THE new Driver Training Regulations, as part of the UK’s formalisation of ADR in line with European Regulations, come into force in January 2007. This will require all drivers of vehicles carrying dangerous goods in excess of the permitted values (ADR 1.1.3.6.3 column 3 or 1.1.3.6.4) to hold an ADR licence. Dangerous goods in this context include almost all pesticides currently stocked by distributors in the UK. Any product classified under UN Regulations in classes 1-9 are included, (although class 1 and class 7 do not include pesticides). There are no exemptions for vehicle size and even small vans, cars and land-rovers are included in the Regulations. Therefore, transport of dangerous goods which exceed the permitted values in any size vehicle, will require the driver to hold an ADR certificate which he must carry with him at all times when he is driving loads including

hazardous goods. In order to help ensure companies can get their

drivers trained, BASIS has

invested in this training course and will be able to offer ADR training very soon. Please do not wait

until December 2006 to get your drivers trained. It takes several weeks to process the results of courses and produce the certificates and current training provision will not cope with hundreds of last minute applications. Under 8.2.3 of the

Regulations there is a requirement for all persons whose duties cover the carriage of dangerous goods to receive appropriate training. This includes office staff, fork truck drivers, storekeepers and drivers not

required to hold an ADR licence. There is still a lot of confusion about what is required but our

understanding is that almost all drivers and support staff will need to be certificated, either with ADR or a Dangerous Goods Awareness certificate.
