Praise for the NPFA but the Football Foundation takes a bit of a hammering ...
Telling it how it is!
IN one of our recent email newsletters we asked Pitchcare members to write in and tell us about the work they were doing. Within a day we had received a number of responses, including two from charities that were set up to safeguard their local open space and play area.
One has the distinction of being the only all female football club charity in the country. Each of the charities has been totally dependent on voluntary support to maintain the areas, begging and borrowing to get the materials and machinery they need. One has had a bad

organisations are not alone in the issues they have to deal with. We are always interested in what our members are doing but, with the best will in the world, we can’t get out and about to see everyone. If you maintain a sports pitch, green or course, then why not share the work and problems that you have with everyone. Let us know how you are getting on, what you are doing and, if possible, send us some images of your work and your site. These are the sort of things
we are interested in. They may not all be applicable, but help to give us a general view of what you do. The more detail that you can provide the more help you pass on to others. You can send your story and

JIM TURNER - Director of Marketing and Sales, Aqua Aid Inc: I grew up in the agriculture industry in central Florida, United States. Being the oldest son my father wanted to make sure I was up early like him so, every morning at 5:00 am, I was up because my dad wanted me up - as he stated “Up and at Them!” So off to college to have control of the early mornings and I end up in the golf course business which starts even earlier. A very good move because it is an industry that I truly enjoy. But I’m still looking for the control of the hours and particularly the early morning hours. The golf industry has given me a chance to be creative in marketing and product

Turf growers take positive steps to address water shortage
MEMBERS of the Turfgrass Growers Association (TGA) have united to address the drought problems which are likely to affect them and their customers. The association has formed a steering group to call for an
exemption from any hosepipe ban for newly-laid turf and to look at practical steps it can take to protect growers and reassure end-users. “Although there are no current restrictions on water usage other than in the South-East, we recognise that water shortage is an issue which will affect everyone involved in the turf industry in the future. That’s why we’re taking proactive steps now to address it”, commented TGA Chairman Stephen Edwards.

In the longer term, growers are working with leading seed companies in the development of new, drought-resistant turf grasses which require less water both at the time of planting and throughout the life of the turfed area.” “In the meantime, all our members are committed to
supporting and advising gardeners, landscapers, sportsturf managers and contractors who are buying and laying turf. Anyone who’s concerned should seek advice from their supplier.” A 10-point guide to choosing, storing and laying turf in dry weather is now on the TGA website at

development, both of which are very satisfying. The single best part of the golf industry is the people, both greenkeepers and industry personnel. I have met life long friends through golf. The dislikes in the world for me are people who do not listen to opposing view points and the senseless amount of hatred in the world today through biases. Quality time for me is travelling with my family, we really enjoying seeing different parts of the world. Trying to maintain an “International 10” in golf. Great spy novels are a treat for me.Good times are a dinner party with friends discussing the world and the details of great golf shots or maybe the unique shots in golf that happen!
