“... yes, daffodil bulbs are poisonous and, no, Jemima shouldn’t eat them!”

football/netball pitch, 200 trees and shrubs and over 1500 bulbs. Still to come this year is 400 metres of pathways, 100 square metres of wildlife area and the restoration of the football pitch. At the start of the project we had an estimate of over £40,000 to carry out the work but with volunteer labour and hard bargaining we have got that figure down to £23,000.

WHAT are the ground keeping issues we face? Well, many are the same as that cricket pitch of 40 years ago, only there is no bar on this one. We have a mole problem; we have conflicts between what is safe and what is exciting; we have to control the litter and keep the dogs and campers off. Sadly, we have no roller to level the pitch and don’t seem to be able to borrow one. We have no storage facility for the little equipment we do have

and we also have to rely on volunteers for everything. One day there is a queue of people wanting to be involved but the next day, when you need a couple of people to mark out the football pitch, there is nobody to be seen. Of course the other

difference - besides there being no bar and no heavy roller - is the internet. With websites such as Pitchcare and the NPFA members site you can get professional backup within minutes (which was sad news for the moles by the way).

And is it just me or does everybody have a committee of people asking them to explain what they are doing? “Yes, it’s grass seed and, yes, I have mixed it with earth so I can see where I’ve sown it - and, yes, daffodil bulbs are poisonous and, no, Jemima shouldn’t eat them and you can try and sue me if you want!”
