The School of Languages and Linguistics at the University of Western Sydney offers an exceptionally high standard of education in a wide choice of study areas in Languages, Linguistics, Interpreting and Translation, and Teaching English to adult speakers of Languages other than English. For nearly two decades the School has enriched the life of UWS through its support for linguistic and cultural diversity, and promotion of the internationalisation of education.
Interpreting and Translation and TESOL at UWS
The University of Western Sydney is a world leader in training and research in community interpreting and translation. The School offers the longest established degree courses in interpreting and translation in Australia that are professionally approved by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters. Languages offered include: Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Spanish or Vietnamese.
Drawing on the local and international experience of the School’s academics, who are experts and renowned researchers in the fields, teaching content and methods incorporate ideas from the workplace and innovative research. Theoretical training is offered in English and students participate in small language-specific tutorials.
The School also offers additional programmes in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). English has become the global lingua franca in education, business and international relations. Worldwide, more people speak English as a second

UWS programmes provide a direct pathway to a career in the TESOL industry and those interested in both interpreting and translation and TESOL can complete a double Masters concurrently, receiving credit for three common units.
Research projects
The School has an active Interpreting and Translation research concentration with academic staff and PhD students conducting projects in a variety of topics including: a study of the professional issues faced by community interpreters; a discourse analytical study of doctor- patient interaction through interpreters; the use of technology software in translation.
The School’s academics are often invited as keynote speakers to address international conferences and called on to assist with international events.

An Australian bachelor's degree or equivalent overseas qualification (recognised by NOOSR in Australia) and native or near-native proficiency in: Arabic, Japanese, Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Spanish or Vietnamese (languages are only offered subject to demand) with an IELTS score of 7 (with no band score below 6)
