When, as a supplier, one is aware of changes and future trends in the market, it is possible to formulate solutions and provide the right equipment that meets the market needs in a timely way. This is the principle that the lightweight construction specialist, Bucher, has always adhered to particularly in the design and development of patient stretchers. Stretcher design is being influenced by changes in aircraft seat geometries and spacing, and the future restrictions this will impose on installing a patient stretcher into the rows of seats. Because of these changes, the current stretcher design requires a completely new approach. Simultaneously, height adjustment capabilities and quick installation times are also design targets.

Meeting the New Specifications

The introduction of the Boeing B787 «Dreamliner» provided the market need for Bucher to develop the ATS. To be compliant with

the specification, it was necessary to meet specific requirements, whereby integration into a new seating rail system was just as important as a «Load Limiter» to dissipate energy without deforming the geometry of the frame. The performance specifications for the ATS also included other characteristics or requirements which had to be satisfied, and, most importantly, the new stretcher had to comply with the Sustained Engine Imbalance (SEI) «Windmilling» requirements. In addition to height adjustability to provide more comfort and more practical benefits, the concept of the new ATS also includes the option of being usable in aircraft types which have greater spacing between the seating rails (for example, the Airbus A380).

Additional Benefits

The most noticeable and tangible result of this new design is an installation time of less than 10 minutes.
