growth of this industry. “Canada is wide-open territory with economic potential” writes Mark Christie of Planet Fitness. Not without its special challenges we note: the HST continues its move into Ontario and now BC, and the music licensing threat continues as we learn of the international concern over this is- sue. Club delegates from around the world will be meeting at the upcoming IHRSA European Congress in Dublin, Ireland to dis- cuss the impact of proposed new fees on our industry. Particular attention will be on Canada, the recent NRCC tariff announce- ments here and Fitness Industry Canada’s defence strategy. To excel in these turbulent times we are featuring creative ef-
W
forts of operators in and outside of Canada. Justin Tamsett tells us “How To Run a Health Expo” (page 18), Colin Milner helps you to target older adults both as members and as staff (page 30) and Amanda Vogel urges you to grow your training business by special- izing (page 32). We learn from Erin Billowits, founder of her own training company, how she has successfully targeted the boomer generation and reached out to her community (page 38). Also in this issue, we present our “2010 Canadian Product and Service Directory”
(page 40). All companies listed in the directory have committed to serving the Canadian health and fitness industry. Check out the supplier directory section for detailed profiles of many of the listed companies. The product and service directory can also be found online at our website, www.fitnet.ca. We close our September/October issue with a sad farewell to a great friend of the fit-
ness business. Jack Lawrence has invested in fitness clubs, inspired his own employees to lead healthier lifestyles and set a personal example as a business leader and good health advocate. His goal was to live to 120 and perhaps beyond. Except for the tragic accident that ended his life, we think he just might have made it (page 70).
