FINDING A SPECIALTY
Continuing Education
THAT FITS
If you don’t have a specialty
but would like to develop one, consider that most specialists don’t start out that way. In fact, spending time as a generalist in personal training may be your first step to becoming a specialist. Give yourself time to discover what you’re most skilled at and passionate about. Just be careful to not spend too long generalizing if what you really want to do is specialize.
When the time’s right,
select your specialty with care, analyze whether there’s a viable market to support it and do your homework. Most of all, follow your interests. And remember nothing’s written in stone. You can always change your specialization, or carve out more than one.
The day-to-day operations of your
business may also run more efficient- ly because when you work with clients who are somewhat similar, you can cre- ate systems to design certain aspects of a program or to handle situations that commonly arise. The bottom line is that specializing
simplifies things. Having a clear vision of which pursuits best complement your specialty helps you avoid burnout and make sound business decisions.
Stepping Out as a Specialist
If you’re passionate about pursuing
one or more specialties for your fitness business, start working toward that goal as soon as it makes sense to do so. This might mean turning clients away if they don’t fit your target market or program- ming focus. Once your specialization is firmly established, you can reap the re- wards of your efforts. FBC
