he says, but they also thrive on the chal- lenge. “When you use equipment that has a timer, you can count the number of reps you do in a period of time and then try to work harder and faster the next time.” Century Gardens Recreation Centre in

Brampton, Ontario, is also experiencing great success with circuit classes. When the staff realized that the recently reno- vated and expanded multi-purpose centre would no longer have an exercise studio, they had to get creative with program- ming ideas to keep their members happy. Their solution was to implement a circuit training program that operates like any standard group exercise program. “The classes attract a good mix of men and women and young and old,” says the facil- ity’s recreation programmer Lisa Bland. Members are so hooked that they now of- fer 33 of the workouts each week. “Attending group classes helps people

exercise more regularly,” says Bland. “And because they’re led by our staff, there’s a social element that makes it more fun.” There’s no trouble finding staff members to teach the classes, she adds. “They love teaching the classes. It’s more fun than supervising the gym because they get to interact with members, choose their own music and get creative with cardio and mat exercises that they intersperse be- tween the equipment stations.”

Beating boredom

If there’s a downside to Curves-style

training workout, it’s that the workout is the same today as it will be tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. Taylor, of Curves, admits that the lack

of variety is a stumbling block for some long term members. On a positive note, she says, the company did recently in- crease the number of machines from eight to 13 for larger clubs. However she feels that most members stick with the program because they value the health and fitness results and the new friend- ships they make. Many fitness and recreation facilities

have the option of mixing up the order of their machines or adding machines to liv- en up the workout. But perhaps the best scenario is when members venture into unexplored areas of their weight rooms with their newfound fitness abilities and confidence. FBC
