A cooler result
Waitrose is committed to minimising its carbon foot- print whilst it rapidly grows its business. Last year, Waitrose, developed, and installed for the first time, a new hydrocarbon based refrigeration system, which is seen as a huge breakthrough for the industry as it is free of hydrofluorocarbons which are a source of
carbon emissions. Helping Waitrose towards these goals is Farnborough based Next Control Systems. Next also provides building and energy management services, managing and controlling both heating and lighting to affect further savings. It also works with Waitrose to extract maximum value from its gas and electricity supplies by programming controls to vary heating and lighting levels according to time of day and the specific requirements of each shop. Savings of up to 14 per cent on power sources have been delivered and the average pay-back time for an installation is between eight and nine months. Next Controls is both controlling and remotely monitor- ing this new refrigeration system, which involves chilled water being moved round the cabinets to re- move the excess heat generated by the refrigeration.

Maximum credits
An Ancon Wall Tie has been named as an integral component in the first Robust Detail to qualify for the maximum sound insulation credits, under the Code for Sustainable Homes. Robust Details Ltd has published E-WM-19; based around Icopal Monarfloor’s Bridgestop acoustic isolation system for masonry separating cavity walls. The assessed structures incorporated Staifix HRT4 wall ties. The HRT4 is manufactured by Ancon from high tensile stainless steel wire. The thin bridge across the cavi- ty formed by the slender profile of this wall tie has a negligible effect on the acoustic (and the thermal) performance of a masonry wall, making it the ide- al solution for this application. No wall tie other than the Staifix HRT4 is currently able to be used in all masonry cavity separating wall details pub- lished by Robust Details Ltd. The Staifix HRT4 is readily available from builders’ merchants and oth- er specialist distributors. It is available in three lengths to suit cavities from 50mm to 125mm.

Phoenix grows south
Interior fit-out specialist Phoenix Interiors has continued its diversification programme by forming a joint venture with Exeter-based Westexe Interiors to expand into the South West of the country. Initially, Westexe will be focused primarily on growing Phoenix’s ex- panding stretch ceilings business, but the intention is for this arrangement to become a fully fledged partnership working across all of Phoenix’s interior fit out services. The Westexe venture is being headed up by Greg Vooght and Hayley Noon. Hayley is the UK’s first accredited female fitter of the Barrisol stretch ceiling system for which Phoenix is the country’s principle supplier and installer. A Barrisol stretch ceiling is a highly versatile and colourful polymer system with a myriad of uses. As well as being extremely flexible, these fabric ceilings, which are literally stretched into place, can be personalised and then manufactured to meet any shape, size or application. Phoenix is also expanding and improving its headquarters building in South London to accommodate an increasing work- force and to give it room for future growth.
