ecobuild review
The role of roofing airtightness
Ecobuild first-timers Klober, focussed on the issue of airtightness of roofs in relation to the Code for Sustainable Homes. Newly published literature and an accompanying CPD presentation examined the role of vapour control layers, air barriers and vapour perme- able underlays in the fulfilment of an effective airtightness strategy. Managing Director David Arendell commented, “ The phrase 'Build tight, ventilate right' has become synonymous with the con- struction of low energy buildings, and failing to achieve the right balance be-
tween airtightness and controlled ventilation presents a real risk of con- densation within the roof space. With every upgrade in insulation standards, so the risk increases. Energy and CO2 emissions make by far the biggest over- all contribution to the nine method of assessment categories within the CSH and as more homes are designed to meet the criteria of levels 4-6, so the importance of air leakage increases”.

Fakro Balcony and High Pivot roof windows on show
Fakro GB was another Ecobuild first- timer and took the opportunity to exhibit its proSky High Pivot and Duet High Pivot roof windows in the U.K. for the first time. The Balcony Window has two sashes, the top-hung upper sash opening seamlessly over a 45-degree range, allowing the lower sash to slide out with its built-in balustrades. The large glazing area ensures that natural daylight is maximised, while the frame is equipped with an automatic air inlet for effective ventilation. When the window is closed, the balustrades are hidden in the frame and, being concealed under the window’s cladding, they do not pro- trude in any way. Like all Fakro roof
