Eliminating heat loss

New from Aico Ltd is Loftcap, designed to over- come thermal and vapour transmission to loft voids after the fitting of downlights into a ceiling. Building Regulations Approved Document L calls for uninterrupted coverage of thermal insulation in loft spaces to minimise heat loss, while Build- ing Regulations Approved Document C calls for a vapour seal between the living space and the loft space to prevent condensation forming on roof timbers and causing premature rotting. Approved by the Lighting Association and NHBC, Loftcaps are quick and simple to install and entirely main-

tenance free. Because they are lightweight, they add no significant load on the ceiling but are rigid enough to allow loft insulation to be laid directly over them. Manufactured from inert mineral fi- bres and organic binders, Loftcaps are specifically designed to resist the formation of any water droplets, which could drip into the lamp and wiring. Their durable construction also means they are rot, corrosion and vermin resistant and are both non-combustible and non-electrically conductive as a further safety measure.

Keywood launch

Decking timbers made from Keywood

Keywood is modified timber and is the latest product to be launched by timber preservation and fire retardant specialists Arch Timber Protec- tion. It has been developed to provide a building material with the widest range of possibilities and uses only natural Bio-Resins and sustainable tim- bers. Keywood, developed to capitalise upon the natural benefits of Radiata Pine, produces a ver- satile, durable and sustainable building material. It can be used both indoors or outdoors, either with or without a coating. The process imbues Key- wood with improved dimensional stability and creates design flexibility benefits when used with other building materials. It retains all of the versa- tility of the Radiata Pine and can be machined into a wide range of profiles and sizes. Keywood has long-term performance properties with Dura- bility Class 1 providing up to 60 years service life.

MEETING PART-L WITH SUPER INSULATION

Architects and specifiers looking to comply with the new revisions to Part L of the Building Regu- lations, will find that the super-insulated versions (.SI) of Schueco's façade systems, FW 50+ and FW 60+ answer their needs precisely. Both .SI systems deliver extremely low Uf values through the use of innovative isolator technology that im- proves insulation in the area between the inner structural profile and the outer pressure plate and cover cap. Both systems have been designed to

accommodate double or triple glazing up to a maximum thickness of 64 mm. The .SI versions use all the existing transom, mullion and cover cap profiles of the standard 50mm and 60mm façade systems but feature, in addition, new glaz- ing supports to allow for increased glass loads of up to 400 kg per transom for FW50+.SI and 600 kg per transom for FW60+.SI.

Wienerberger is to incorporate the Desimpel range of products into its portfolio. Already well established in the UK market place, Des- impel will be fully integrated into the Wienerberger offering with immediate effect, adding to the 300+ products already offered by one of the world’s biggest brick manufac- turer. In 2010 Wienerberger plans to work closely with customers to further develop the range and bring new products to market. As a result of the integration, Desimpel customers will now be able to take advantage of Wiener- berger’s national sales and distribution network. Desimpel soft mud stock bricks have a handcrafted, rustic appearance perfect for refurbishments, sensitive restoration proj- ects and new buildings with character. Each is individually moulded and purposely designed to have an irregular shape and creased texture. Formerly distributed by Hanson, Wienerberg- er’s Desimpel range includes traditional and aged styles in 14 colour variations, with special colours and sizes available to order.
