ecobuild review
Benefits clear for all to see
The Mtech Consult and Galliford Try ‘Innovate Offsite’ building at Ecobuild ably demonstrated how combining appropriate Offsite techniques and systems delivers significant cost and performance improvements, making compli- ance with increasingly stringent environmental and performance criteria more certain.
Mtech - a leading Offsite consul-
tancy in the UK - used its expertise to identify, source, develop and specify Offsite systems to maximise their cu- mulative benefits in areas such as the building’s environmental performance, build time and whole life costs. As the construction contractor, Galliford Try integrated the Offsite products and methods in the build phase to deliver a superior finished building whilst re- ducing site duration, waste, noise and
deliveries, plus improving site environ- mental and H&S compliance. The 70sqm building was created entirely using Offsite methods and systems and delivered a high stan- dard of finish throughout; visitors particularly valued the technical tours, which explained the systems and their integration in detail, demonstrating that Offsite is not just about individual components - it’s a practical, efficient and effective con- struction method.
To deliver the project, Mtech and Galliford Try drew on products and services from 15 specialist UK Off- site manufacturers. These readily available Offsite options are helping architects, developers and contrac- tors create more sustainable, cost effective buildings.

Steico Launches Lime Render System
A new high performance insulated wall construction system, using lime based render applied directly to natu- ral wood fibre insulation panels, was launched by Steico Limited at Ecobuild. Steicoprotect (BBA applied for) is targeted at the growing timber frame and refurbishment markets and is part of the company’s focus on healthy insulation of the building fab- ric and regulating the internal climate. The system comprises a natural wood fibre panel of 40, 60 or 80mm thick- ness on to which a two coat lime render system embedded with rein-
forced mesh is directly applied to a thickness of 16mm. The system is de- signed to work with readily available render bead profiles and may be pre- colour impregnated or over painted with water based exterior paints.

Think twice about energy consumption
Since 2004 housing costs have risen by between 40 per cent and 50 per cent, putting huge pressure on home- owners and on local authorities. Fuel bills are constantly rising and with ap- proximately 57 per cent of fuel used in the domestic sector being used for heating, it’s obvious to see why peo-

ple are feeling the pinch. Creating a more energy efficient home not only benefits the tenant, but also the land- lord. Obvious benefits for tenants include a more comfortable home, a reduced fuel bill and reduced debt. For landlords it can mean reduced re- pairs, lower maintenance costs,
increased asset value and improved customer satisfaction. The Grundfos ALPHA2 is an amazing domestic heating pump with remarkably low power consumption. Its energy A – rated and is capable of operating down to as little as five Watts!
