Natural ventilation

A new €25 million primary care centre (PCC) in Mal- low, County Cork, features natural ventilation and an automated window control system from WindowMas- ter. WindowMaster supplied the window control system for the natural ventilation solution, which in- cludes 120 motors controlling the windows in 94

different zones throughout the centre. Six of the zones have controlling fans but the rest of the installation uses purely natural ventilation. WindowMaster was also chosen to provide the window automation system for Mallow PCC because of its ability to provide a com- plete installation, in particular the central computer control system. In addition, the installation includes motors, window actuators, various sensors and a weather station. The control system understands and knows how the wind speed and direction on all façades will influence the airflow through the windows on each level and location in the façade. WindowMaster deter- mines the Cp values (pressure coefficients) individually for each window by calculating the relevant air pres- sures from different wind speeds and directions.

Anti-seismic solution

Following the devastating earthquake in L’Aquila Italy in April 2009, a forward-thinking reconstruction project has been undertaken by “CogEsi” a new con- sortium of highly experienced building companies specialised in innovative and environmentally sustain- able solutions. Seven buildings of 25 apartments each have been constructed for the families whose homes were declared unusable following the disaster. The project adopts a "dry stratification" technology, which satisfies the highest anti-seismic and sustain- able building standards. For the building envelope, “Celenit” supplied a panelised insulating solution (for roofs and walls) made with natural and sustainable materials and with the added protection of DuPont Tyvek Enercor metallised breather membranes.

Low shrinkage requirements

Sika concrete admixtures were the solution for CE- MEX UK, when a special low shrinkage concrete was required on the Palm Papermill project, which is being constructed by the German company, Glass GMBH in Kings Lynn. CEMEX UK, who has sup- plied a total of 115,000 cubic metres of concrete to all parts of the project from their on-site plant, had a requirement in two areas for a concrete that would produce very low shrinkage on curing. For these ar- eas, Sika Control 40 concrete admixture was included in the mix. Sika Control 40 is a shrinkage-reducing admixture used to produce high performance con- crete with greatly reduced drying shrinkage. The first area where Sika Control 40 was used was in the base of large liquid storage tanks, where the concrete would be used to encapsulate the void and provide stabilisation. Sika Control 40 was also used in the

tight vapour-open membrane with CE certification: thanks to a proven low emissivity surface, it blocks radiant heat in summer and reduces heat losses in winter while delivering breathability.

Levolux at ‘The Hub’ of eco-architecture

When Atkins developed its new HQ in Bristol, it wanted the design to show the world how modern buildings could play a key role in the battle against climate change. Among the many initiatives, which enabled the completed 9000m2

office building, known as “The Hub”,

to achieve a BREEAM Excellent‟ rating is a Levolux Solar Shading solution. Levolux was chosen by Atkins to design and install a cus- tom solution comprising of horizontal and vertical extruded Aerofoil Fins with an integral Walkway system. The complete solar shading system helps reduce the building’s dependency on air conditioning, thereby reducing carbon emissions and running costs. Levolux installed 400mm wide aluminium extruded Aerofoil Fins horizontally and vertically, with a com- bined total length of 2900 metres. Together, they help shield glazed areas from the sun’s rays, while allowing natural daylight to filter through and good outward visibility. To com- plement the Aerofoil Fins, Levolux installed its Walk-on Brise Soleil system, with 320 metres of 750mm wide extruded aluminium walkway, installed at two levels on three elevations. This not only helps to reduce solar heat gain, but also provides a secure platform for mainte- nance and cleaning of the windows.

mix for a variety of concrete machinery bases, where the machine mounting plates were bedded into the concrete. Low shrinkage in the concrete was again required to retain the integrity of the plates.

STRATFORD STATION: SET FOR OLYMPICS

The first phase of the construction programme to modernise Stratford Railway Station, the main transport link to the epicentre of the 2012 Olympic Games, has been completed. Stratford Regional Station and the tracks that serve it are being upgraded in three phases so as to improve accessibility and capacity. Gaysha Specialist Sur- faces was approached by Network Rail to come up with a durable surface for the platforms and public areas that would cope with the significant increase

in passenger numbers. Gaysha laid 1,700 square metres of Ayton Tripave®

, a highly durable, rapid

cure and waterproof surfacing based on technical- ly advanced methyl methacrylate (MMA) resin technology. It is anti-slip, a crucial requirement for platform applications, and is one of the few prod- ucts that can be laid on mastic asphalt.
