New Urban Design and Place Shaping course launched by Anglia Ruskin University and Regional Cities East

Yorkshire Copper Tube to shine at PHEX

Anglia Ruskin University has launched a new Urban Design course developed in partnership with Regional Cities East (RCE). This new one year Grad- uate Certificate in Urban Design and Place Shaping has been de- veloped to help people in public, private and third sector organisa- tions improve their ability to understand, design and deliver great places.

Daniel Durrant, Capacity for

Urban Renaissance East Manager at RCE, commented: ‘The planning sector now recognises it needs to deliver great places where people want to live, work and spend their time. We need great urban design to be a central part of any redevel- opment. This course is different. It’s not about training urban design- ers but training other professionals, such as planners and economic de- velopment officers, to understand and apply urban design to the work they are already doing.’ Dr Alison Greig, Skills Develop- ment Consultant at Anglia Ruskin University said: ‘By collaborating with Regional Cities East through our Higher Skills @ Work initiative, we have been able to create an Ur- ban Design qualification which precisely meets the needs of organi- sations who are working towards the

common goal of delivering great places. The course has been de- signed to support learning in the workplace, helping staff to deliver better projects as they learn and min- imising their time away from work.’ Assessment is based on a portfo-

lio of evidence including real life projects, evaluations of good prac- tice and Continuing Professional Development sessions. The course is designed for professionals already involved in place making or place shaping. This is likely to include assistant officers and officers in planning, design and regeneration teams, policy teams and develop- ment control. It will also be relevant to architects, surveyors, highway engineers, transport planners, engineers and conservationists. Anglia Ruskin University has secured funding from HEFCE to significantly reduce the cost of this course for its January 2010 start. Small and medium sized pri- vate sector organisations can also apply for beyond 2010 funding which may reduce these fees by another 50 per cent.
