Maryland, D.C, Virginia, Delaware and Philadelphia area were invited to attend this celebration. Seventy-
four “Ezhlai” were taken. Folks liked the choice of celebrating the event in a public venue . This trend
might continue in future too. Next year’s Pillayar Nonbu organizers are Annamalai & Raji Annamalai

Pillayar Nonbu celebrations for Detroit area Nagarathars was held on December 27th, 1997 at Dr. Ram
Nagappan’s residence. The function was attended by a large number of the Detroit area Nagarathars as well
as a few visitors from near and far. The function began with us singing devotional songs on Pillaiyar. Dr.
Shanti Srinivasan, Sadayappan, Amutha Sadaps, Sala and Meena Sadaps, Shanti Veerappan, Kannathal,
Jasmine and Meena Andiappan, Janu and Ruby Lakshmanan sang some other melodious songs. Dr. Ram
Nagappan distributed seventy-five “Ezhlai”. A delicious dinner made by all the assembled ladies and
served in our traditional style followed this ceremony.
As the gathering was a celebration cum sleep over, many stayed to participate and enjoy the cultural
programs. We had Nagarathar Jeopardy, where we were quizzed about Nagarathar history and practice
by two Kannan Chockalingam (Florida) and Sathya Ramiah (Chicago). The participants were divided
based on gender (by choice) and the program was very interesting as well as challenging. Many hitherto
unknown facts and pieces of information were brought out to the audience. The raucous event ended in a
draw. Nagarathar jeopardy was followed by another lively program called “Jodipporutham” designed to
test couples, both newly married as well as who had celebrated their silver jubilee anniversary. Nine
couples participated in the program conducted by Dr. Alamu Murugappan and Nagu Lakshumanan. The
winning couple with a near perfect score was Visalakshi & Meenakshisundaram, followed by Shanti &
Subramanian. The grand finale was a “Pattimandram - titled Kudumbathin Munnetrathirku Mukkia Pangu
Vahipathu Kothuch Chaviya ?, Chattai Paiyya?” Shanti Subramanian chose this topic for discussion- and a
heated debate began! Taking the arguments into consideration as well as from practical day to day
happenings, it apppeared that, both “kothuchavi ” and “chattaipai” have a symbiotic relationship and are
needed for a family’s progress. However, owing to a major role played by the former than the latter, the
judge Dr. Shanti Srinivasan ruled that it is “kothu chaviye” which contributes to a family’s progress.
Birth:
Shanti & Subramanian were blessed with a baby boy Muthu in January 1998.
