L k Who’s Talking…
We invited a few comments from Nagarathars on the topic :
What do you love and what do you hate about Nagarathar Weddings?
And this is what they said.
I love…
♥ The effort parents undertake to find a best match for their child
♥ The wonderful reunion of all close and immediate family members.
♥ The practice of keeping up our tradition and rituals
♥ Going back to our native place to conduct the wedding
I hate…
r Demanded dowry. Probably our forefathers established this system to provide a sense of security for
the newly wed couples, however, over the years this has become a monster and ruined numerous lives.
r Too much spending for the wedding. Saving penny by penny for years and spending their life time
savings in ONE day! Unpardonable waste of food in the name of extravagant feast!

I love…
The excitement and happiness generated by the grandeur of our Nagarathar weddings! There are
several things that contribute to this of which one stands out - the attire of the guests! Silk saris in
glorious colors, blouses that are in vogue, jingling silver anklets, sparkling jewels and innovative
bindis - all these bring a vibrancy to a wedding !. It is also a great feeling for the wedding couple to
see guests dressed up in grandeur on account of their unity.
However….
What I feel would enhance our Nagarathar weddings, is the general comprehension of our customs
and rituals, which contain symbolic expressions of powerful values. Many rituals are performed in
our weddings, which most of us do not understand the significance. There isn't any point in
carrying out such rituals just because it has been done for centuries – we should be inquisitive and
strive to understand our customs.

I love…
The gathering of family members, the sound of laughter and merriment all around you, listening to
our “Chettiar Bhashai” and the sumptuous food, of course !! The significance of each and every
tradition in our weddings never ceases to enthrall me…like “Kuzhavalam pillai” etc.
I hate…
The practice of dowry, “maamiyaar saaman”, demanding jewelry and the ever escalating “rates”!
