BUBBLING UP
Czech lighting specialist Lasvit has created a series of aquatically
inﬂuenced installations for Macau’s new City of Dreams resort
Enhancing the triptych of world-class hotels
that make up the City of Dreams luxury
resort in Macau, a variety of stylish glass
chandeliers have been created by Czech
lighting specialist Lasvit.
Perhaps the most impressive of the installa-
tions can be found at the Resort’s main en-
trance. Part light fixture, part giant crystal
glass sculpture, the Sea Anemone is a 6m by
6m one-off piece. Constructed without any
solid support system, each glass element
hangs on near invisible steel wire ropes
- double belayed for safety. All parts were
hand made by Czech glass masters without
the use of any moulds.
The piece is illuminated from within by
fibre optic strands and washed externally by
colour changing LEDs. The combination of
glowing lights and the piece’s huge, seem-
ingly gravity-defying, organic presence are
intended to enchant visitors as they enter
the resort, giving them a sense of tranquil
harmony.
The Sea Anemone shares themes with The
Ice, a piece by the same designer Jitka
Skuhravá, found in the Hard Rock Hotel’s
Rock Star Suite.
The Ice installation is a mass of organic,
cast glass tentacles, blooming from a dis-
crete stainless steel base. Lit from within,
the fixture is reminiscent of a sea urchin.
Solar Bubbles, found in the Rock Star Suite
and on Retail Street, comprise a host of
glass ovals forming an amorphous cloud.
The whole of Retail Street is illuminated
along its length by coloured LED lighting.
Solar Bubbles reflect this light as well as
seemingly emitting their own pale glow
(provided by the halogen downlights above
the installation).
Other pieces include the Flammy Ribbon,
a shoal of hand-blown, amber glass pieces
floating behind the reception of the Hard
