May we recoMMend? Your Pride Dining Out Guide
café eleven
Café Eleven has been serving Hillcrest French
Country Cuisine at 1440 University Avenue since
1985. They are even dog-friendly with pooch accom-
modations on their outdoor patio! Open for both
lunch and dinner, they offer a $6 deal on the former,
which includes Soup and Salad, Mac & Cheese and
Chicken Wings—and it certainly won’t cut into funds
put aside for the various circuit parties that happen
during Pride. The latter ranges from seafood dishes
(Shellfish Crepe) to a hearty portion of meats, such
as Rack of Lamb, served with a rosemary demi-glace.
Bon appetite!
Lucha Libre
The literal translation for the new-kid-in-town
gourmet taco shop, Lucha Libre, in Spanish means
“free fighting.” It also is widely associated with profes-
sional wrestling in Mexico. So it’s no surprise to see the
likes of famed masked Mexican wrestler-types, like
Santos, adorning the walls at the 1810 W. Washington
Street in Mission Hills locale. But, for your brain and
palette it equals an all-out brawl as to which variation
of classic vs. new items to choose from on their menu.
They will be locked in battle to sample either a tried-
and-true Pollo Asado Taco or a Surf & Turf Burrito, with
marinated steak and shrimp and avocado slices. Let’s
get ready to rumble, indeed!
Hawthorns
Hawthorns, located in adjacent North Park at 2895 Uni-
versity Avenue, did start out as Fifth & Hawthorn until it
moved locations a few years back. It most definitely mer-
its a mention because of the food and upscale setting.
Located in the North Park Birch Theatre, it affords patrons
the opportunity to grab a delicious meal and then see a
show. Rock Shrimp Risotto, a Barbequed Pork Chop or
Stuffed Roasted Chicken Breast are just a few of the items
that can be enjoyed, and no meal would be complete
without their famed Crème brûlée. Why not visit their bar
for a ½ price Happy Hour daily from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. or
stop on in for their Sunday brunch? Written large on the
marquee out front above the restaurant should be, “Now
Playing: Elegant Dining At Its Finest.”
