house and home by joel martens
I love the bedroom. So much time is spent there,
and sadly it is often the most neglected room in the
house—the last on the list. But if you think about
it, we spend at least eight hours there every day.
Awake, asleep and all of the activities done in be-
tween. I think it should be one of the most indulgent
spaces in your home. If designed well, your bedroom
should invite and calm. Function, is of course, part of
the mix, but comfort and serenity for me are of the
essence. Choose your colors based on how you want
to feel when you’re in the room. A calm palette in
soft blues and greens can be soothing to the eye and
senses. Hotter colors like reds, rusts and even purple
combined with earth tones and natural fibers can
accomplish the same feel if they are rich in tone and
texture.
On the practical side, we all need a place to put
our shirts, jeans, shoes and socks, etc. and the way in
which you do that is an individual choice. I’m not a
huge fan of traditional chests or dressers, so I prefer
closets that are set up to easily handle whatever
