team in front of you. It’s another kind of work. I like
both working on a film and in the theatre very much.
They each have their own magic.

Rage: What was the experience like of working with director
Paul Morrison and what did you learn from him as an actor?
JB: It was great! he is very calm, doesn’t speak a lot,
but he gives everything very clearly. We connected
very well from the beginning. he trusted my work and
I trusted his. It was very interesting for me to listen to
his point of view about Lorca, Dalí, Buñuel and Spain.
he is very English and his opinion of our story is very
interesting. It’s another opinion, without prejudices.
Rage: The film primarily takes place in the 1920s. Looking
back on filming, describe the good and the bad parts of that
decade when you were fleshing out the character you are
playing.
JB: From a Spanish point of view, the looming Civil
War was a very significant aspect of the 1920s and
1930s, so I always had that in mind when playing the
character.
Rage: Creating chemistry with Pattinson on the set…
what was this process like and what were some of the most
memorable moments on working with him and Matthew
McNulty?
JB: They are both very professional actors and we
had a lot of memorable moments both on the set
and when we were not working. Maybe this will not
sound particularly funny, but for me it was a curious
moment when all the actors learned to dance the
Charleston. I don’t know if it was a funny moment
Javier Beltrán as Federico Garcia Lorca in Little Ashes
or a pathetic moment but it was ridiculous! I think
the teacher was surprised by our talent for doing
this dance. Try to imagine rob, Matthew, Marina
Javier Beltrán (l) and Robert Pattinson as Salvador Dalí in Little Ashes
and me dancing the Foxtrot...I think you would have
another movie. Being on the set was great when we
were shooting in Cadaqués. It is a special place and
we shot the water scene there. Can you imagine it?
rob and me in the middle of the sea, in a boat, at 7pm
in October, with just a t-shirt and underclothes on,
and the director says, “OK, when I say jump, you just
jump”. At this moment you ask yourself, “Why do I
choose this profession?” I think the scene looks great
on film...so it was worth it.
Rage: Finally, have you auditioned for more films roles and
do you have a new project in the works for your next film?
JB: My simple goal is to work, and to work well.
right now, I’m working in theater in Barcelona in
a Spanish and Catalan version of history Boys by
Alan Bennett. I found it very challenging to work in
English and I look forward for further opportunities
to do this.
