World All Stars Barry Middleton and Helen Richardson have been chosen as UK players of the year for 2010 by British members of the Hockey Writers’ Club.

Richardson, the 29-year-old Great

Britain, England and Reading central midfield player, was also the 2009 winner of the award. She enjoyed a excellent year internationally being instrumental in England winning bronze medals in the World Cup, Commonwealth Games and the Champions Trophy. Middleton, 27, is currently playing his

indoor hockey with East Grinstead but is due to return to his German side Club an der Alster who he signed for this season. Helen and Barry received the

There was mixed news for Scotland in the U21 indoor European championships in January. The U21 women finished fourth in

their home tournament in Stirling to maintain their place in the top division,

Knightsbridge, London. Simon Mason, president of the England Hockey Board, himself a winner of the men’s award in 1994 and again in 2003, presented the awards. Helen donated her cheque to the

youth section of her first club – West Bridgford Monarchs HC – Barry did likewise, to his first club Doncaster. Plaques and cheques were also

presented to Alice Sharpe (University of Birmingham), Andy Bull (Loughborough Students) and Harry Martin (Old Loughtonians) as winners of the Higgins Group UK youth hockey awards by Richard Higgins, chairman of Higgins Group plc. Crista Cullen was also named as the winner of the Marjorie Pollard Salver for 2010 following an outstanding performance for England in the Commonwealth Games. The awards were presented on January 26, 2011.

One up one down for Scot U21s

while the U21 men were relegated from the A division after finishing seventh from eight teams in Prague. “We lacked the necessary experience

at this competitive level of indoor hockey,” said coach Russell Garcia.

Dutch fire up SPAIN: Ireland’s men lost both games in a two-test series against the Netherlands in Spain. The Irish took a 2-0 lead in the first test through Timmy Cockram and Chris Cargo, before second-half strikes from Teun De Nooijer (earning his 430th cap) Wouter Jolie and Robert Van der Horst won the game. The Dutch blew away the Irish 5-0 in the second test. Ireland have been drawn in the same group as European champions England and bronze medalists the Netherlands for this summer’s European hockey championships to be held in Moenchengladbach, Germany from August 20-28. France are also in the same group.

INDIA: The long-running battle for control of Indian hockey between the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) and Hockey India (HI) threatens to spill over into world hockey. An Indian Supreme Court decision about who is in charge is still pending, but the IHF has launched a well-funded professional league, ‘World Series Hockey’, to be contested by city-based franchises late this year along similar lines to the lucrative Indian Premier League cricket tournament. High profile Indian stars have already been signed, including skipper Rajpal Singh and defender Sardar Singh. Overseas players are also, reportedly being approached, prompting the International Hockey Federation (FIH) to warn that the tournament would be unofficial and players could be risking their international careers by playing. The FIH recognises HI, not the IHF, as the official governing body of Indian hockey. The FIH says it has also been working towards establishing a professional league in India.

Record close

SOUTH AFRICA: Piete Coetezee is coming up quickly on Russian Natella Krasnikova’s 220 goal international scoring record. The 32-year-old South African scored her 207th goal in 212 tests, against China, on January 27.
