Conditioned games


Conditioned games are small-sided games aimed at developing understanding of game play. The ‘conditions’ imposed depend on what the coach is trying to achieve


– you can change the size of the playing area, the shape, the goals, restrict the number of touches and so on. Matt Taylor gives us another game to try – end zone

RECAP ON PRINCIPLES These games are designed to improve


understanding of game play and game awareness whilst developing a winning attitude. Pitch size is important – a bigger pitch emphasises endurance, a smaller pitch, skill. The number of players per team needs to kept small (3-8 ideally). Focus on attacking or


end zone The end zone game is designed to make


sure we have passing options (height) ahead of the ball at all times. The scoring end zones should be 2m deep.

PRINCIPLES Each team has one end zone to attack and one end zone to defend (see below)


The ball has to be played into the end zone and received by another attacker for a goal to be scored, so a player can’t ball-carry into the end zone

Players have to move into the end zone but they can’t stay in there if the ball doesn’t come.

COACHING POINTS Encourage players to lead high


ahead of the ball but get the balance right, i.e. not everyone to lead ahead but instead some to offer square and backward passes

players should look to move and not stand in line between the immediate defender and the ball and therefore create an easy pass

Defenders have to worry about both the ball and the high player, i.e. what’s in front as well as what’s behind


When attempting to link up with the high player, two passes or more are often more successful then one direct pass.
