Year One (2004)
The Northern Kites re-introduction scheme
commenced in summer 2004 in a blaze of media
publicity, the fi rst kites being revealed to the press
at Chopwell Woods in early June. The twelfth
of July saw the release of the fi rst six red kites
into North East England, after an absence of over
170 years. In total, 20 birds were successfully
released in 2004. Even in its fi rst year, the Project
attracted attention from many quarters, receiving a
message of support from the Prime Minister, Tony
Blair MP, and in November 2004, it was named
in the Journal newspaper’s list of 100 things that
made living in the north ‘great’.
