Red Kite Health Walks
In September 2008, Northern Kites, in
cooperation with Gateshead Council, developed
a series of weekly ‘Red Kite Health Walks’.
These were specifically designed to provide
health benefits for their participants, as well
as offering an opportunity to view kites. By
April 2009, 63 people had registered for these
walks and begun to see positive health benefits,
as regular attendees soon began to request
extensions to the walk route, as people felt that
their health had improved sufficiently to address
new challenges.

Outreach Work
In order to raise awareness of red
kites and the environment, Northern
Kites established a number of red
kite information networks, termed
‘Community Kite Clusters’. These
‘Clusters’, in strategic locations
across the region, were designed to
encourage people to learn more about
kites, and to appreciate the green
space within their own local area.
Locations for these included Rowlands
Gill, north Northumberland and Leam
Lane Estate in East Gateshead. In
this latter area, Northern Kites worked
to encourage people to overcome
perceived barriers to accessing the
countryside by offering ‘Red Kite
Safaris’, school competitions, family
craft days and guided walks to local
‘green spaces’, as well as opportunities
to appreciate red kites.
