The Kite-Filled Future
The completion of the funded-phase
of Northern Kites, in July 2009, did
not mean an end for red kite activities
in the region. Some of the functions
of the Project will continue, through
the work of the Partners, including
Gateshead Council, the National
Trust and the RSPB.
Perhaps most importantly, ‘the
people’ will be doing it for themselves
through FORK (Friends of Red
Kites - in the North East). This is
an independent, fully constituted,
registered charity that will encourage
people who love kites to join its ranks
and support its work. Working with
other organisations, such as the
Northumbria Ringing Group, FORK
will continue to undertake some of the
monitoring work of red kites, as well
as some of the people-
engagement activities.
Given the scale of the
release programme
and the subsequent
breeding success of the
Northern Kites red kites,
it is now possible to see
kites every day in the
lower Derwent valley.
Birds have spread deep
into Northumberland
and County Durham,
giving people across the
region the opportunity to
see these magnifi cent
birds.
