Red Kites are
Nest
renowned for their habit
of collecting items to ‘decorate’

their nests, especially anything that
is white or light-coloured. Shakespeare,
in The Winter’s Tale, referred to it when
he warned, “When the Kite builds, look to
lesser linen”. Post-breeding inspection of
the nest from which Geordie fl edged in 2006
revealed its contents to include, a white
teddy bear’s head, a very discoloured white
sports sock, and a plastic, supermarket
bag. Subsequently nest decorations have
included a woolly soft toy, further socks,
a glove, a sponge ball, an England
football fl ag, and even a pair of
men’s underpants.
