something that would encourage out visitors to stay longer in the park and the whole Sheshan resort. We are expecting more visitors because of this show. Lake of Illusions is really a combination of traditional Chinese cultural elements and very modern technology.” This particular production from ECA2 incorporates a

unique new effect called Spiroscreen®. The result of a full year's R&D, it uses rotating water jets (fixed to the Icon) to produce a giant spectral surface where video, light and laser images can be viewed. The tower is further brought to life using pixel mapping, which create a real sense of movement. For the first time in one of its shows, ECA2 has also found a way to control the height of the flame effects, meaning it can create suspense throughout, with higher flames in the finale sequence than in the middle of the show. “ECA2 is a world-class show producer, and very

professional,” acknowledges Zhang. “Prior to launching Lake of Illusions we visited their shows in Wuyishan [Fountain of Dreams] and Korea [Big O Show]. A sign of the good co-operation between us and ECA2 is when you see their logo next to that of Happy Valley Shanghai at the end of the show. We believe that in the future there will be the possibility for OCT to work with ECA2 again.”

Multimedia spectaculars as revenue drivers

why parks in Europe are missing out “Nowadays almost every major new theme park around the world wants to have a nightime spectacular,” notes ECA2 chairman and CEO, Jean-Christophe Canizares. “The goal is to bring people together after a busy day spinning around on this or spinning around on that; to have a happy moment and then, hopefully, stay into the evening.” “We have a long history in China,” continues the ECA2 boss, who acted as

producer to Lake of Illusions at Happy Valley Shanghai. “We develop a lot of shows in Asia, but Europe is a little tougher. There are not really people making big investments, but let's look at the return on investment. A show like this in the same price range as a medium sized rollercoaster. So you could have a very nice rollercoaster, of average scale, or you could have a nighttime spectacular that keeps people in the park. We know, we speak to parks all the time, and the level of that is raised in the park is 5-10% more on all the F&B and retail.”
