he art program continues to flourish at Bergen Catholic High School under the direction of new art teacher Zachary Mazouat. Mr. Ma- zouat is a graduate of The College of New Jersey in Ewing, NJ, and prior to coming to Bergen Catholic worked in the Morris and Sum-
mit school districts. Students in Mr. Mazouat’s classes take an academic ap- proach to learning art by completing written critiques for each of their works. Bergen Catholic artists will not only be able to adeptly create art in a variety of media, but also intelligently and articulately discuss and evaluate their work. Sophomore art students are focusing on developing the observational, as
well as technical, drawing skills to more effectively render realistic three-di- mensional form as they exist in space. Student learning has been tiered start- ing with simple observational line drawings, moving to gradation, shading to develop form, and most currently translating value into color by creating monochromatic portraits in acrylic paint. Bergen Catholic continues to offer a two-year Advanced Placement art
course to talented juniors and seniors. Upon the submission of a 24-piece art portfolio at the end of their senior year these talented artists have the op- portunity to earn college credits for their work. The aim of this course is to encourage independent thinking while cultivating an individual artistic style and unique point of view. Junior artists have begun working on the “Breadth” section of their port-
folio, which will explore a wide variety of media, artistic styles, and compo- sitional elements. The senior artists have begun work on the second “Concentration” section of their portfolio, which is a collection of 12 works under a unifying theme. Bergen Catholic’s continued dedication to the arts has allowed students
to explore the visual arts using the finest quality materials, and Bergen Catholic students continue to complete work at the highest standards.
