SAN JUAN Explore

San Juan Capistrano’s residents and leaders are passionate about preserving their natural surroundings.

Time and time again, they have

proved their commitment. Most recently, in 2008, local voters approved two ballot measures to protect open space. In doing so, they agreed to a $30 million bond measure and granted the city per- mission to purchase open space that would otherwise be sold for development.

With the support of the all- San Juan Creek Park

volunteer organization, San Juan Capistrano Open Space Founda- tion, the city has welcomed two new parks since 2013—Dr. Joe Cortese Dog Park and the Reata Park and Event Center, one a 2.5-acre park for local canines and the other a 12-acre park featuring more than 2,000 native plants, an equestrian staging area, a network of paths and trails, and facilities for events and weddings. Open space is a pillar of the city. Made up of nearly 50 percent open space, San Juan Capist- rano provides a critical habitat safeguard for the region’s native plants and animals. It is the city’s vast open space and pristine rolling desert hills that make it one of the most beautiful and distinct municipalities in Orange County. With 40-plus miles of multi-use trails and nearly two dozen parks, San Juan Capistrano’s open-air is waiting to be explored.
