AUTO CENTER OF CAPISTRANO

Competition can create a wedge between opponents in certain arenas. For San Juan Capistrano, it’s done just the opposite. Competition has fused Capistrano’s new car dealerships together to create a stronger, more energetic retail scene drawing

customers from across the region to shop and service in San Juan. The city’s six automotive groups represent 10 brands—Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, Honda, Jeep, Kia, Nissan, Scion, Toyota and Volkswagen. While these auto manufacturers and retailers are battling it out in the global marketplace, locally they see the importance of working together for the greater good of business and for the betterment of San Juan. “We have always worked together to make San Juan a good city,” says Capistrano Volkswagen owner Miles Brandon. “Everyone that comes to this town loves the town and wants to do right by the town.” Brandon entered the San Juan car scene in 1997 after purchasing the Capistrano store from

Volkswagen of America. Volk- swagen was the first brand of new cars sold in San Juan. The dealership, under the name and ownership of Bill Yates, was built in 1963 and included a Porsche sales division. The luxury sports car line was later dropped but Capo VW remains a facet of the local auto community—one that has expanded significantly over the last 50 years. From two brands to 10, San Juan’s new car offerings have grown. At Capistrano Toyota and Scion, it’s a familial business— owned and operated by the Hogan family. The dealership, with a sister store in Claremont, even features advertisements with owner Roger Hogan’s grandson—license plate frames, marketing materials and the dealership’s website all display- ing his smiling face with the company tagline, “Oh Baby!” The Tuttle-Click group, own- ers of the local Ford dealership, boasts a large family operation that stretches from Irvine to Tuc- son, Arizona. Serving Southern California since 1946, the auto group—founded by Holmes Tuttle, who got his start selling Ford parts in Oklahoma and later opening the nation’s first stand-along Lincoln dealership in Beverly Hills and working with Ronald Reagan’s cabinet—now has six California and 10 Arizona locations. It’s an international operation at Imperio Kia and its partner- owned Nissan location. The stores, under the umbrella of Grupo Autofin Mexico, are among the Mexican company’s first locations in the United States. The group also has two Nissan locations in Garden Grove and Irvine. Over at Ocean Honda, the company prides itself
