Guapas Tapas

Golesorkhi said. “It’s about our family to yours.”

For something a bit less tra- ditional, Guapas Tapas & Wine Bar has a variety of culinary influ- ences with a touch of tradition. “We have a 70/30 rule

here—30 percent is going to be authentic tapas that you’d find in Spain, and 70 percent is going to be stuff you’ve never seen before,” said chef and co-owner John Muniz.

Inspiration spans geographi-

cally from San Francisco and Chicago to Peru and Uruguay. Equipped with a cozy sidewalk patio, broad beverage selec- tion and the Muniz family’s recipes, Guapas offers a tour of the New World in a European atmosphere. Menu items like the pan roasted duck, while slow to catch on, routinely sells out, as do the tuna tartar and the roasted cauliflower. If diners want to stick with what they know, grandma’s recipes will always be on the menu—in- cluding the paella, a traditional Spanish rice dish.

Bravo Burger Another way to take a world

tour of flavor is at Rancho Capistrano Winery. They import grape juices and ferment, oak, rack, filter and bottle their prod- uct, wine, in a historic downtown facility and another in Rancho Cucamonga. The grape juice, 60 percent of which comes from around the world, and 40 percent from Cali- fornia, is often blended to create a wider flavor palate. So far the winery has produced more than 50 different wines, a process which can take four to five months for a white and about a year and a half for reds. Most of those wines are one-off batches, but Rancho Capistrano tries to keep a dozen or so favorites in stock at all times—the current best seller is The Godfather, an Italian Barolo made with grapes from the Piedmont region of Italy. The popularity of lounging in the winery’s large, dog- friendly patio has resulted in an expansion of both the food and local draft beer menu. For a quick refresher of body

and mind, it’s hard to beat the historic grounds that harbor the Los Rios Street-located Hidden House Coffee. All the coffee here comes from beans se- lected by the head roaster who scours the globe for the best he can find and sends it back to be roasted in the little house that it will eventually be brewed in. While the staff crank out handmade pastries and bever- ages, visitors can take in the calm of rustling leaves on the patio, or take a seat in the house with as much character as the drinks served within. “Everything we do is pretty unique and it’s all handpicked,” said baker and co-owner Kevin Montoya. “We’re not buying mass quantities of one thing; we have individual small batches from all over the world.” Dine San Juan with an open mind and palate. The chefs of San Juan have an unbridled imagination—there’s no telling where they’ll take these foreign in origin and steeped in tradition flavors to next.—Alex Paris
