Winners of LACA Awards for Excellence 2015 announced


Winners of the LACA Awards for Excellence 2015 were announced at LACA’s Main Event on 9 July.


The annual awards ceremony, which recognises the education food industry’s most committed, innovative and successful schools and individuals across the UK, took place in front of more than 600 people. The evening also included a presentation to LACA School Chef of the Year 2015 Kate Davies from Caerphilly Council, and a char- ity raffle in aid of Black Country Food Bank, which raised £5,100.

Baking Team of the Year crowned Nene Valley Primary School in Peterborough was crowned the first McDougalls Young Baking Team of the Year. The team, made up of three Nene Valley school children and supported by school caterer Sarah Kirk, baked butterfly garden party cupcakes. Joel Coulson, aged 10, Brook Sawyer, 10


and Anna Zubrek, aged nine, faced tough competition from schools across the coun- try at the final. Nene Valley Primary School achieved high scores for teamwork, presentation, taste,

aroma and texture. The competition – involv- ing teams of three children, aged seven to 11 – focused on the creation of sweet and savoury recipes for a birthday party theme to celebrate McDougalls’ 150th anniversary. The finalists were St John Bosco


Catholic Primary School, King Edward Pri- mary School, Middle Park Primary School, Wyken Croft Primary School and Nene Val- ley Primary School. Nene Valley Primary School was presented with a trophy and a cheque for £1,000 in vouchers by LACA chair Carrieanne Bishop.


Lisa Faulkner filming new children’s cookery show


Former BBC Celeb- rity MasterChef win- ner Lisa Faulkner announced she was about to start film- ing a new children’s online-cookery show, Crash My Kitchen, as part of the BBC’s Dish Up campaign. The actress and presenter demon- strated her culinary


skills and spoke of her passion for cookery. Crash My Kitchen will feature as a mini-series on the BBC’s Dish Up website. The year-long culinary campaign produced by BBC Learning invites audiences to get clever in the kitchen and make cooking enjoyable and accessible. Faulkner said: “I want children to learn to cook and I’m in an incredible position to try and get them interested. We have to get chil- dren talking about food and it needs to be some- thing they understand.”


Professional Standards for school food workforce launched


The Professional Standards for the school food workforce – which are part of the School Food Plan – were launched at LACA’s Main Event. LACA chair Carrieanne Bishop and work- force development project manager Ruth Asker-Browne launched the standards in front of around 350 delegates.


Developed with hospitality skills sector body


People 1st, the standards focus on what people should be able to actually do rather than looking solely at what training should be undertaken. Standards for five roles were launched – head of kitchen (catering manager/head chef), school cook, assistant cook, general kitchen/ catering assistant and midday supervisor.
