INTRODUCING THE YARIS WRC
TOYOTA’s involvement in the WRC over the decades resulted in some of the sport’s most iconic rally cars. Who could forget the might of the Celica or Corolla? The new Yaris WRC certainly has a lot to live up to but it is already looking the part thanks to a promising initial test programme.
In the hands of Stéphane Sarrazin, the car was spotted by eagle-eyed observers testing in Belgium in September, relishing the wet conditions which splashed a glorious tinge of muddy brown onto its otherwise pristine white canvas.
2014: 20 years since TOYOTA Team Europe secured its second successive manufacturers’ title in WRC, and the new Yaris WRC took its first tentative steps. Without livery and under the watchful eye of TMG’s small rally test team, the car racked up the kilometres on a variety of terrains to simulate the demanding conditions of modern WRC.
TMG will add to its enviable pool of motorsport talent during 2015 as testing ramps up. Several staff played an active role in the original rally activities but this new programme will run in parallel to the team’s championship-winning WEC campaign so the company will increase its dedicated team of rally specialists to engineer and operate the Yaris WRC.
Rallying remains in TMG’s DNA; the company made its first step back into the world of rally last year with the introduction of its GT86 CS-R3 customer rally car, designed to R3 regulations. However, the new Yaris WRC will re- immerse the company fully into world rally, showcasing once again the passion and determination that TOYOTA has to succeed on the competitive WRC stage.
