news Milacron invests in Europe
US machinery group Milacron has announced it is close to completing a major investment in its operations in the Czech Republic, including a €5m expansion of its mould components and mould base operations at Sasovice. The investment includes a expansion of the
1,000m2
existing Tirad non-standard mould base facility plus a new 3,000m2
distribution centre that will support both the Tirad
and DME mould components operations in Europe. Both will be operational in the first half of this year. “We knew that expansion
and investment in Europe was required in order to support our growing customer base,” said John J Gallagher, Chief Operating Officer Melt Delivery & Control Systems/Fluid Technologies, Financial & Shared Services. “The facilities in Czech allow us to offer more
support, more flexibility and more product inventory, all at faster delivery times – services that we feel are critical in this market.” The company is also in the
process of building an 11,000m2
blow moulding
systems plant at Policka. The €11m investment will create a
world class blow moulding machinery production operation, the company said. ❙

Unilever gains from 3D print
The Italian division of consum- er goods company Unilever claims to have cut lead times for prototype parts in final material by 40% since introducing the use of 3D printed injection moulding tools using Stratasys’ PolyJet printing systems. The company is using a
Stratasys Objet500 Connex machine to produce 3D printed tools for production of up to 50 prototype parts in end-applica- tion materials for its house- hold care and laundry goods divisions. The moulds are printed in the Stratasys Digital ABS material.
“With 3D printing we’re now
able to apply design iterations to the mould within a matter of hours, enabling us to produce prototype parts in final materials such as polypropyl- ene, 40% faster than before,” said Stefano Cademartiri, R&D, CAD and prototyping specialist at Unilever. ❙
