electronics enclosure sector, thermosets can still offer a cost effective option in high temperature applications. Japan’s U-Pica recently introduced a new thermoset polyester moulding compound – Vyloglass – offering good mechanicals, thermal resistance and halogen-free flame retardance. The material, which is distributed in North America by Mitsubishi Gas Chemical America, is supplied as a dry pellet and is based on crystalline unsaturated polyester resins. It is suitable for processing by a range of techniques, and is claimed to offer an alternative to PPS and PBT in applications requiring good thermal and electrical performance. According to U-Pica, the material offers high
resistance to electrical tracking and arcing. It moulds with minimal shrinkage and does not produce any gases or mould build-up during processing.
