Mitsubishi goes direct with LFT processing

Japanese machinery maker Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has launched a new technol- ogy for direct compounding and moulding of long fibre reinforced thermoplastics (LFTs) on the injection machine. The new D-LFT system

comprises a dedicated screw with special mixing element, automated resin and glass fibre feeding systems, and software control to maintain consistent addition of the glass content. According to Mitsubishi, compounding LFTs on the

moulding machine will reduce material costs by around 25% compared to pre-compounded granular alternatives. It also allows materials to be produced with longer fibre lengths. A spokesperson for the

Plastic Technology division of Mitsubishi told Injection World the D-LFT system is a propri- etary solution developed by the company with assistance from Japanese glass fibre producer Nippon Electric Glass. The technology is available

now for use with PP and is being marketed globally.

Target application sectors include automotive, appliances and construction. Mitsubishi said it is currently working to expand the technology to include polyamide resins and carbon fibre reinforcements. The D-LFT technology can be specified as an option on MEII+ all electric moulding machines in 550, 650 and 850 tonne versions and on two platen electric emII series machines from 1,050 to 3,500 tonnes. It can also be retrofit- ted to existing equipment. ❙ www.mhi-pt.co.jp

Volvo selects Roctool system

French heat-cool moulding technology specialist Roctool has announced a license agreement with Volvo Cars allowing the Swedish company to use its 3iTech process in production of a key component for its IntelliSafe system. The Roctool technique will be used to manufac- ture the body moulding on the back surface of the central mirror, which contains the radar for the IntelliSafe

system. The technology is used on the interior surface of the component to reproduce critical mould surface microstructures that modify

optical characteristics to prevent the radar being ‘blinded’ by sunlight. According to Roctool, no other single-shot moulding technique was found able to meet the optical requirements without resorting to an additional operation such as painting. The first Volvo model to

use the Roctool IntelliSafe component will be the new XC90 SUV( (pictured). ❙ www.roctool.com

Pyramid builds moulding capacity

US-based Pyramid Plastics has installed three new Toshiba moulding machines as part of a major upgrade of its injection moulding operation at Rockford in Illinois.

INJECTION WORLD | March 2015 Over the past four months,

the custom moulder has commissioned 50, 130 and 180 tonne models, the 130 tonne unit as part of a fully automat- ed manufacturing cell that will

produce five different products for a customer. The company operates 28 moulding machines at its 4,200m2

facility. ❙ www.pyramid-plastics.com www.injectionworld.com
