STAY‘N’PLAY New park hotels on the horizon
Wild Fire starts to
Fårup Sommerland The Danish amusement park Fårup Sommerland is to realise its dream of resort status with the addition of a 4-star hotel (see rendering above), opening in 2016. “We have wanted a hotel in the park for years,” confirms president and managing director, Søren Kragelund. “Like everything else in Fårup Sommerland, the rooms will be decorated in a really fun forest theme with children and family- friendly layout from top to bottom.” Groundbreaking for the DKK 45 million project is due any day now. The 51-room hotel will be integrated into part of the park’s forest and offer views across the lake to the rollercoasters Orkanen and Falken. Located close to the North Sea and sandy beaches of North Jutland, Fårup Sommerland has been part of the Danish tourism landscape for the last 40 years.
Dollywood In Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, construction crews have placed the final spire atop Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort’s entrance tower marking an important milestone for the 307-room
property which opens in summer 2015 nextdoor to Dollywood theme park and Splash Country waterpark. Inspired by Dolly Parton’s childhood memories of growing up in the Great Smoky Mountains, resort guests will receive park privileges like door-to-door shuttle service, alongside amenities like indoor and outdoor pools, landscaped gardens and a sit-down restaurant, salon and spa.
spread at Kolmården The Swedish animal park Kolmården already has its own hotel, but something much more exciting is brewing. As can be seen in this exclusive photo, groundwork has begun in preparation for what is arguably the most anticipated wooden rollercoaster in Europe. Built by Rocky Mountain Construction to a design by famed coaster engineer Alan Schilke, Wildfire will open in 2016 and feature a whopping 132m climb (435ft) above the blue waters of Bråviken bay (the lift hill itself is 57m/187ft), before the train plunges 49m (161ft) down towards the bottom of the ravine at an 83° angle. Other superlatives of this SEK110 million ($16.5m/$12m), 1.3km-long (4,266ft) include three inversions, an ‘inverted zero G stall’ and 12 airtime hills (four with negative G). Rocky Mountain’s European agent is
Vekoma, which supplied Kolmården's Delfinexpressen family coaster in 2009. Nick Farmer (Farmer Attraction Design) is working on the ride’s theming and logo etc, having collaborated previously with Kolmården owner Parks & Resorts Scandinavia on several other projects.
Groundwork begins!
Camelback Lodge & Aquatopia OK, this a new resort rather than a new hotel at an existing park. Camelback Lodge & Aquatopia Indoor Waterpark, Tannersville, Pennsylvania, will apparenrtly be the largest ski in/out indoor waterpark hotel in the USA when it opens this coming March. The 533,000 square-foot (49,517 sq m), $163 million property will span 453 guest suites and offer in 24 suite configurations. An integral part of the development will be a 170,000 sq-ft family adventure centre including bowling, blacklight laser tag, rock climbing, go-karts, and the highly-anticipated Aquatopia Indoor Waterpark, which will feature seven pools, and 13 waterslides including the Storm Chaser water coaster and a family raft ride called Venus SlydeTrap.
