Did you know there will be 15,000 Lego models at Legoland Dubai when it opens in 2016? You do now. I can also tell you that there are over one million individual Lego bricks in Art of the Brick, a travelling exhibition currently at the Old Truman Brewery in London. Maybe you’ve seen it at one of its other stops around the world? The show’s 80 Lego creations range from replicas of famous paintings such as the Mona Lisa and Munch’s The Scream to a large three-dimensional dinsosaur skeleton, portraits of pop stars, plus original Lego sculptures by artist Nathan Sawaya. “My goal is to elevate this simple plaything to a place it has never been before,” says Sawaya. “I also appreciate the cleanliness of the Lego brick. The right angles. The distinct lines.”
Some of his creations are arguably more artistic in concept than others, while others might pass as exhibits or pieces of theming in a Legoland park. I dropped into the exhibition last month, when there was a steady trickle of visitors passing through, including several kids in tow. As Merlin Entertainments knows only too well as it develops new Lego parks and attractions around the world, there is something about the allure of those little plastic bricks that pulls in the crowds. Interestingly, the admission price to Art of the Brick is about the same as you’d pay to enter a Legoland Discovery Centre. The dwell time might be a little less, but you do still get the chance to play with some Lego bricks at the end of it. There’s a gift shop too of course. If I didn’t know better, I’d almost suggest this was Merlin colonising another corner of London by stealth.
The exhibition runs until 4 Jan, more details at
