New in Vegas Family-friendly fun

Visitors to Las Vegas wishing to escape its omnipresent gambling activity suddenly have several new family-friendly options at their disposal. Featured at the Fremont Street Experience is SlotZilla. OK, its name and theming celebrate the city’s casino culture – as does the new High Roller observation wheel at The Linq – but this 12- storey-high zipline from Zip-Flyer offers a more wholesome experience. Built at a cost of $12 million, the attraction features two thrill levels, a lower zipline and an upper “zoomline.” Flyers on the former take off from the lower tier of the tower, 77ft (23.5m) high and zip up to 35 mph (56km/h) in a traditional seated-harness position on an 850ft (260m) flight to a mid-point landing platform. Flyers on the zoomline, meanwhile are launched from 114ft and zoom in a horizontal “Superman” position across 1,700ft (520m) – the entire length of Fremont Street Experience and its signature LED video canopy – landing atop a newly-built Main Street Stage.

Described as a “creative playground,” The Downtown Container Park is located

Downtawn Container Park

alongside the Fremont Street Experience, offering a diverse range of entertainment including a cinema, giant electronic games, slides food, drink and retail outlets. Constructed from freight

containers, “pop up” facilities like this are finding favour in a variety of locations and formats, from shopping malls to short-stay hotels. The Downtown Container Park (below) was conceived and funded by Tony Hsieh, founder of the online shoe and clothing store Zappos. Many of the merchants renting retail spaces are start-ups enterprises offering unique merchandise and works of art. Staying open Friday and Saturday nights until 1am, there are also numerous food outlets, green spaces, a domed cinema and a stage area. The main attraction, however, is a huge mechanical praying mantis sculpture (as pictured above), who gives a live show at sundown. Also new in Las Vegas this year a second waterpark alongside Wet ‘n’ Wild, the new Cowabunga Bay – report coming soon in these pages.
