at Plopsaland De Panne, Belgium. Alongside a new indoor waterpark (Plopsaqua, opening March) it will now also add a themed tea cup ride and upgrade its Samson and Gert area. Together with Kabouter (Gnome) Plop, Samson gives his name to Studio 100’s five-strong chain of parks in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany.


Estimated to open in summer 2015, Zhengzhou Yinji Kaifeng Waterpark will be China’s largest waterpark. It also marks a significant milestone for WhiteWater, which has secured its largest-ever single order within the global waterpark sector. The park’s developers have ordered in excess of C$29-million (US$25.9) worth of the Canadian company’s products. Visitors to the park in Henan can expect nine separate waterslide complexes featuring nearly 50 slides – inlcuding an Abyss ride as pictured above – three custom themed AquaPlay structures, a Shoot the Chute water ride, three wave pools, two types of Wave Rivers and a FlowRider Double. The colossal facility will boast an indoor and outdoor portion, and anticipates a peak day capacity of 15,000 guests indoors and a further 32,000 outdoors. A US$3.3 billion theme park will be built in Beijing, China by Universal Parks & Resorts and consortium Beijing Shouhuan, reports the LA Times. The 300-acre resort, which could grow to 1,000 acres, will open in 2019. The complex will also offer a Universal-themed hotel and Universal CityWalk entertainment complex. It would be Universal’s first park in China.


Proof, if proof were needed, that the next wave of theme park development in the United Arab Emirates will be driven by branded attractions featuring well-known global IPs comes with the news that Motiongate Dubai will feature a Dreamworks Animation Zone. Operated by Parques Reunidos, Motiongate is one of three parks being built as part of the Dubai Parks and Resorts by Meeras Capital, alongside Legoland Dubai and a Bollywood theme park. Elsewhere in the Emirate, Marvel, Cartoon Network, Universal and Six Flags will also lend their name to new parks.


The new Mack rollercoaster Alpina Blitz is credited as contributing towards a 7% attendance uplift in 2014 at the French amusement park Nigloland. Located in Dolancourt, about two hours south east of Paris, it hopes to finish next season on at least 550,000 guests.

Cedar Fair is introducing a Snoopy themed area at one of its US parks. Great America in Santa Clara, California, will expand and rebrand the former KidZville as Planet Snoopy. New rides from Zamperla will include Joe Cool’s Gr8Sk8 (skateboard-themed Rockin’ Tug), Peanuts 500 (Speedway/mini whip) and Snoopy’s Space Buggies (Jump Around).


Registration for AIMS International’s 43rd Annual Safety Seminar is now open. This comprehensive seminar, to be held from 11 to 16 January, promises classroom and hands-on safety training along with invaluable networking opportunities for ride inspectors, maintenance, operations and aquatic personnel in the amusement industry. The VIA University College in Aarhus, Denmark, is offering what is believed to be the first course of its kind in Scandinavia. As part of its multiplatform Storytelling and Production degree programme, students at VIA have recently been studying such seasonally popular offerings as dark rides, walk-though scare attractions and Pepper’s Ghost illusions. Following the introduction of the Colossus Curl this summer at Adventure Island, Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Virginia, its sister waterpark in Florida is to get an attraction of the same name from ProSlide – as pictured below. This first new attraction at Adventure Island, Busch Gardens Tampa, since 2006, like its counterpart in Williamsburg, Colossal Curl will combine funnel and wave elements. Construction will begin in early 2015. Standing nearly 70ft (21m) high and 560ft (170m) in length, it will be tallest ride at Adventure Island.
