COSTA RICA


Wildlife lovers can see leatherback turtles lay eggs from September to March on the Pacifi c coast and from March to June on the northern Caribbean coast. Here, Tortuguero National Park is a great place to watch the heroic half-shells lumbering up the beach, as well as the hazardous journey of the hatchlings back to the sea. Perennially buzzing Dubai is particularly eventful in February. ITALY


Venice is home to one of the most internationally known festivals, as well as one of the oldest – Carnevale di Venezia. The congregation of masks and bright coloured costumes is a visual treat. Fallas in Valencia puts Guy Fawks to shame, with the fi ve days leading up to Saint Joseph’s Day (March 19) giving way to huge fi rework displays, a cacophony of fi recrackers and the parading of ninots – giant puppets in the form of public fi gures which are eventually burnt.
