Third time Lucky
There are some destinations that give you that ‘been there, done that’ feeling and others that, almost magically, draw you back time and time again. For our regular columnist, Barbara Charlton, Saint Lucia feels like coming home
H
aving been to Saint Lucia twice previously, once on a tourist board fam back in 2009
and for a holiday in 2011, I was keen to return to discover what had changed on one of my favourite Caribbean islands. Our arrival into Hewanorra International
Airport, located in the south of the island, felt like a bit of a homecoming! Monrose (from Hilary Moise Taxis) was there to
meet us. He would be our driver for the next 10 days, moving us around the island and, at the end of our trip, back to the airport. At St James’s Club Morgan Bay, I recognised
several of the staff from my last visit. This property is certainly a good recommendation if you have active adults or free-spirited children of any age. Couples too will also enjoy the
resort – there’s an adults-only pool and bar on the hillside, and plenty of entertainment, dining and activities.
Sense of adventure Saint Lucia has an indigenous rainforest and Rainforest Adventures took us 1,500 ft above sea level in an open-topped ‘cage gondola’, accompanied by our own expert guide. The guests on the trails and zip-wires also sounded like they were having a great time! Next, we tackled Segways with our guide, Sheldon, from Lucian Style. With complimentary pick-ups from most hotels in the area you do not need to worry about getting there and back and can just relax knowing you can have a fun few hours away from the beach. Watching my husband try to centre his balance on the Segway was hilarious! Once he was sorted, we headed off up to Mount Gimmie, along a nature trail, stopping along the way to admire the views and take pictures. At the top of Mount Gimmie, the views out across the north of the island provided one of the highlights of our visit. I highly recommend this trip, or a similar one including dinner on Reduit Beach, with a fabulous sunset as the backdrop. Our next hotel was the lovely Windjammer
Landing, a perfect resort near Rodney Bay for families or groups. Windjammer’s whitewashed villas have exceptional sea views. Our two- bedroom villa
came with a private plunge pool – stunning! Windjammer’s staff are very friendly and seem to do everything they can to ensure your stay is a memorable one.
A head for depths The resort has a variety of accommodation categories: from suites up to four-bedroomed villas and residences, many with the private pool option.
Whilst the all-inclusive is excellent, offering a good choice of onsite restaurants with premium drinks and nice wines – including champagne by the glass – there is also a mini-market near the pool where families can stock up on the children’s favourite snacks or breakfast cereals and any drinks they want to keep in their villas.
