PATA puts on a show in London OUT & ABOUT
talking shop
On September 11 18 members of PATA (Pacifi c Asia Travel Association) joined forces to share aspects of their culture with the UK trade in East London’s Village Underground. Each PATA member made sure it
gave agents a real taste of what it has to offer, with a selection of food, a destination-specifi c activity or local tipple. Various prize draws were held throughout the evening, which saw agents win hotel nights, fam trip places and much more.
YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT The PATA region is famous for its gastronomy, ranging from Sushi and sake in Japan to coconut milk curries and cold beer in
Thailand. Exhibiting partners at PATA put on a feast which included custard tarts from Macau, fortune cookies from Hong Kong and curry puffs from Malaysia. These were washed down with some pure and healthy Fiji Water, a few glasses of New Zealand’s famously crisp Sauvignon Blanc and a selection of craft beers from Australia.
ACTION STATIONS
But the night wasn’t all about eating and drinking though! There were various activities which kept agents busy and learning more about the diversity of the PATA region. • Visitors to the Thailand stand enjoyed a Thai massage • New Zealand helped recreate 'Middle Earth' in Shoreditch with the help of some cardboard cut-outs, giant hobbit ears and hairy hobbit feet. • Fiji had a resident warrior who shared a bowl of the traditional ceremonial drink Kava
with passers by
• Papua New Guinea offered face painting for agents to become a tribal warrior themselves!
HEARD IT ON THE GRAPEVINE… India surprised everyone with its selection of home-grown wines. On its stand was a selection of Soul Tree tipples from the Nasik Valley. A three-hour train ride from Mumbai, this is one of the few places in India where the climate and soil is ripe for grape growing. Soul Tree is one of the boutique brands which exports its Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Rosé to the UK – it could be coming to an Indian restaurant near you soon!
It was all about rugby for Samoa, as tickets went on sale for next year's Rugby World Cup! Samoa will play its opening game at the Brighton Community Stadium against the USA. The Samoa stand was also focusing on food and gave away a cook book from celebrity chef and Samoan, Monica Galetti.
NEW SELLERS The river cruise specialists from France, Croisi Europe, have purchased the Mekong River Cruise Company, meaning it now offers a choice of four boutique vessels cruising between Cambodia and Vietnam, holding between 48 to as few as 20 passengers. Guests
