community ■ CEC RECEIVES GRANT FOR SYSTEM REPAIRS

Choctaw Electric Cooperative received $1.5 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), to recover costs associated with the December 2013 ice storm. Terry Matlock, CEO of Choctaw Electric, said the grant is the largest one the co-op has received in the past 10 years. It represents $3.5 million dollars in funds to support maintenance, operations and educational programs to promote efficiency and conservation.

“Landing grants such as this one is a win-win for our co-op and its member-owners.”

“We actively seek available grants as part of our aim to keep rates down by using funds from federal energy and rural development grants to invest in the maintenance of our system, Matlock said. “With more than

3,600 miles of distribution lines, the need for funds from sources outside of the revenue generated from electricity sales is important to us. We are enjoying success in securing funds for our co-op, as is underscored by this recent award. Landing grants such as this one is a win-win for our co-op and its member-owners.”

Praising Matlock for his success in securing the grant, CEC Board President Mike Bailey noted, that grants are not the same as loans that must be paid back at some point in the future. “Terry and his grant writer have demonstrated that they understand the grant process and have successfully procured these available funds for Choctaw Electric several times over the past 10 years,” Bailey said. “Their efforts help bolster rural development by making sure CEC can deliver reliable electricity and keep electric rates as low as possible. This will lead to greater economic opportunity for the communities and residents we serve.”
