which can be modified as required. The Silo2

can be used for the automatic

storage of all types of product from light materials including plastics, clothing accessories and pharmaceuticals to much heavier ones like steel moulds, nuts and bolts and mechanical components. The Silo2

consists of one or more tray

storage columns because it has internal handling equipment that works on three axes: vertical (Y), horizontal (X) and tray release (Z). Tray width and the number of columns chosen allow the creation of a made to measure storage system which has the same capacity as two or more traditional vertical lift systems. When dealing with materials of variable

T

he capital cost of purchasing a unique storage system which utilises your

available space can sometimes prove to be more cost effective than relocating your whole business. However, property is not readily available today and demand high rents and rates plus the chance of losing good reliable staff, moving to a new location, disruption in the daily work schedule all adds up so why not stay put and utilise what is available. There is a further solution: make the

space that is available to you work better with an intelligent storage system. Not only will it create more space, but there is no upheaval or major disruption to the day to day running of your business. It is not always easy to see the space

you are wasting, you can gain an expert view from a fresh set of eyes and utilise what is there, for example, roof space, fresh air within racking and shelving and under a mezzanine floor. A storage lift system or carousel can

provide you with the extra space needed without relocating and providing good stock control, improvements on pick to packing times along with retrieval and storing away items resulting in a more efficient workplace. Monarch Aircraft Engineering chose this

route for a new hanger at Birmingham Airport due to lack of space available for the tooling and parts stores. They needed

to replace several pallet bays with a more efficient storage system to enable them to fit twice the capacity of tooling and parts which they use for repairs on aircraft. With the assistance of UKI Storage Solutions, Monarch chose a 3-column Silo2

storage system. The result, a more effective storage and

space management stores facility has been achieved, strict time scales for repairing aircraft have been met and all without having to expand the stores as first thought. The Silo2

is a shifting tray system for

the storage of all types of items from small components to larger items. Its dimensional flexibility, both horizontally and vertically, makes it ideal for any type of environment. A modular design allows for the creation of storage systems which fulfil any space or weight requirements, offering almost 1 billion configurations. Ranging from 600mm to 2000mm in

width and 600mm to 1200mm in depth, the trays are suitable for storing materials that vary both in size and specific weight. The combination of two capacities 250kg and 400Kg and 105 different tray dimensions means that it is even possible to manage items with a very high specific weight. The basic structure of the tray can be

equipped with side extensions and removable dividers of varying heights

heights, the management software automatically scans the space occupied by each tray and then positions it in the most suitable location. This provides maximum flexibility in the use of the machine. In the case of materials of uniform height, each tray is stored in a predetermined location. This type of configuration makes the most of all available space. The Silo2

can

offer combined configuration when some materials have uniform and others variable heights; it is possible to adopt a combined solution of automatic and fixed configuration. Access openings can be positioned either on the same level, on different levels and/or opposite each other. In the multicolumn storage systems two or more bays placed side- by-side eliminate standby times. When dealing with heavy materials

and/or using a crane, an internal pull-out bay avoids the necessity for external fixed bulk. Operator safety is ensured by a closing metal panel which does not allow access during operation of the machine while timing belts guarantee very low noise levels. With these systems there was no need

for the expense of individual ones and they were tailored to fit their facility. The Silo2

can offer good storage from low

heights up to and over 14m with multiple picking ports available for mulitple operators; while one is putting away the other can be picking with no delay in operation compared to individual machines. The Silo2

comes with a PC,

remote access facility and basic software with no hidden costs for operation.
