Babcock Wanson boiler helps convert food waste into renewable electricity

V Higher Pressure

Hydra-Cell pumps available

I

n response to customer requests and following extensive testing, Hydra-Cell® G35 high pressure,

diaphragm pumps are now rated to 100 bar pressure. Conventionally the G35 has been rated with a maximum pressure of 83 bar and a maximum flow rate of 140 litres per minute. The new version, is now rated with a maximum pressure of 100 bar at a maximum flow of 67 lpm, which should open up new applications for this popular and economical Hydra-Cell model. This very versatile, workhorse of a pump is available with a wide variety of liquid head materials, including brass, cast iron, duplex 2205, super duplex 2207, nickel alloy (Hastelloy®) and 316L stainless and variety of flange types is available on request. Capable of pumping both hot and cold liquids, in a wide range of viscosities, Hydra-Cell pumps are characterized by their complete lack of dynamic seals, making them ideal for transfer pumping, dosing, injection and metering applications where complete liquid containment is essential.

iridor, one of the UK’s leading recycling, renewable energy and waste management companies, has installed a Babcock Wanson

HEB 1050 Hot Water Boiler into its anaerobic digestion plant at Walpole near Bridgwater, Somerset. Each year, Viridor transforms over two million tonnes of materials into high quality recyclate, and yet more into over 760 gigawatt hours of renewable energy. It operates several Anaerobic Digestion (AD) facilities across the UK, which uses renewable energy technology to capture methane expelled by digesting unwanted food within enclosed tanks. The gas is then used as a source of energy for heat and electricity, which is fed into the National Grid.

To aid the production of methane, the digestors are warmed by circulating hot water around them. The new Walpole site has one boiler, a Babcock Wanson HEB 1050 Hot Water Boiler which has been used to start the initial AD process and will acts as a standby, should the Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system require maintenance or supplementary heat.

Steam Boiler Feedwater Storage Technology White Paper T

Advertorial

he new Spirax Sarco Steam Boiler Feedwater Storage Technology White Paper outlines how best practice feedwater storage system design and

operation can unlock higher energy efficiency and lower operating costs. Implementing an effective feedwater storage system will help to avoid corrosion damage in the boiler and steam and condensate loop. It helps to ensure the entire steam system runs with minimum energy consumption and that modern package boilers are able to efficiently meet the fluctuating demands required by many of today’s industries. A well-designed feedwater storage system will also help protect a steam system operator’s capital investment by extending the lifetime of the plant. The White Paper highlights new technologies that can help steam plant owners and operators to get the most from their steam boiler feedwater storage system. These include deaeration, a process of heating feedwater to remove oxygen from the feedwater. Deaeration substantially reduces the amount of oxygen- scavenging chemicals that need to be introduced into the feedwater system.

JSP’s breakthrough Skyworker™ helmet T

he EVOLite® Skyworker™, JSP’s newest industrial safety helmet, has been specifically designed with a suspension system and

shell structure that offer maximum head protection, making working at height in industrial, mountaineering, rescue and leisure activities safer than it has ever been. The Skyworker™ features a shock- absorbing expanded polystyrene (EPS) liner to give excellent side, front and rear impact protection. Both liner and shell are vented at the side and rear to reduce heat within the helmet and increase comfort, whilst continuing to safeguard the wearer. Conforming to EN12492 Mountaineering Standard, in tests for which the helmet is subjected to impact from the top, front, sides and rear, and capable of absorbing almost twice the vertical energy of an EN397 helmet, the extremely comfortable Skyworker™ ensures a precise, stable, fit on the most active wearer’s head, thanks to JSP’s trademark, fully- adjustable, 4-point quick-release chinstrap.

locking (to prevent access while hazards are present), various control elements, an emergency stop pushbutton (E-stop) and escape release (for personnel who become trapped in the hazardous area) all in one system, up to the highest category PL e as per EN ISO 13849-1 (BS EN ISO 13849-1 in the UK). The robust, over-dimensioned bolt (or tongue) that forms part of the handle locking mechanism is a hybrid heavy-duty metallic bolt with an associated RFID coded element that communicates with the bi-stable locking shot-bolt in the switch body; in the unlikely event of the bolt breaking it will be detected and safety is assured to PL e. This also guarantees the highest level of protection against defeat or manipulation, which is becoming an increasingly important topic with the publication of EN ISO 14119.
