LASER PROFILING HELPS DELIVER BEST TRADING FIGURES

One of the fastest growing laser cutting companies in the East Midlands Lincoln Precision Engineering (LPE) says that the installation of a TRUMPF TruLaser 5030 fiber laser profiling centre with BrightLine fiber technology has helped deliver the best months’ trading figures in its 26-year history. The record month of July followed

the machine’s commissioning in June 2014. At the time of writing August 2014 was on course to beat July which would set another record. LPE’s 15,000 ft² facility operates 24 hours a day supplying quality

strategy, a point that was identified in 2013 when the company mooted the idea of acquiring another laser cutting machine. “We already had a TRUMPF

components to local and national customers at a competitive price with fast lead-times. The company employs 20 people and generates annual turnover in the region of £2 million. Taking the business to the next level would require a new

TruLaser 3030 4kW CO2 laser but it was often running 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” explains managing director Trevor Wherrell. “Although it has proved a very

reliable machine we started to worry that we didn’t have back-up if it went down for any reason; we had no capacity to grow as a business without a further laser cutter.” Machines offering BrightLine fiber

SENSORS & INSTRUMENTATION 2014 REGISTRATION OPEN

Visitor registration for the annual Sensors & Instrumentation show is open. The popular exhibition and seminar programme returns to Birmingham’s NEC 30 September- 1 October where it will be co- locating with the Machine Building Show and Micro|Nano|Mems. Simply visit the website and

register online for free entry to all three shows and conferences. This year’s event will be the biggest so

far with more companies, larger stands and an even greater variety of technologies on show. “The 2013 exhibition was a great

success,” comments show organiser Kathryn Ambrose. “This year we are looking forward to welcoming a number of new companies.” Products being showcased will

include: sensors, transducers, flow & level measurement technologies, vision and thermal imaging

equipment, test and measurement tools, data acquisition equipment, connectors and enclosures. “In addition to displaying well

established products, a number of companies will be using the event as a platform to launch products to the UK marketplace. Staff will be on hand to answer questions and provide demonstrations.”

THE PROVING FACTORY PARTNERS MAGNOMATICS IN PRODUCTION

B

ritain's manufacturers increased their output

strongly in the 12 months to July according to official data, driven by a boom in plastics and transport equipment. Factory output climbed 2.2% on the year, continuing a run of solid growth seen every month since last September but the industries are still well below their pre- crash peaks. Manufacturing output remains 7.6% below the record levels of output recorded in early 2008. Still, signs of recovery can be

seen and the positive business news and developing technologies highlighted in this issue testify to that.

Magnomatics has announced The Proving Factory as the production partner of both its MAGSPLIT power split and PDD wheel motor devices at LCV2014. The MAGSPLIT device will be the first to go through The Proving Factory. Three sub- assemblies are being produced over the next few months to test and finalise the manufacturing and assembly process – ‘prove out’. There is a development contract

for the MAGSPLIT device in place and this product is the subject of several contract discussions. An order is in negotiation with a commercial vehicle OEM for the PDD wheel motor device which is due to go into production with The Proving Factory in quarter one of 2015. “Magnomatics originally joined

The Proving Factory to meet the medium volume requirements of automotive customers with its MAGSPLIT power split device,” says managing director Chris Kirby. “Now, 18 months on we have signed up The

Proving Factory as our production partner for both the MAGSPLIT product and our PDD commercial wheel motor. Over that time the relationship has continued to strengthen and we’ve seen the value The Proving Factory can give us in terms of engineering knowledge and manufacturing techniques. As a result our technologies are more proven and we are closer to market.” Director of The Proving Factory

Nick Rodgers comments: “We are proud and excited to announce that Magnomatics has chosen us as production partner on its MAGSPLIT and PDD wheel motor devices. The founding aim of our business was to support technology developers in producing their innovations at the levels and to the quality OEMs need to incorporate them into vehicles and it is good to see that vision coming to fruition through companies such as Magnomatics.”

Fast-growing Tuffscreen Screen Protection has moved to larger premises in Bristol to allow for further expansion. The technology company manufactures custom- made screen protectors to provide unrivalled scratch and impact protection to the mobile computers and barcode scanners, satnavs and smartphones used by companies in the field. The technology developed by founder Tristan Fowler bonds a hard-coated anti-glare film to a self-adhesive gel layer to give radically improved performance. Now the company has taken a five-year lease on the 2,600 sq ft building at an annual rental of £18,200 and carried out refurbishment and alteration works to the premises.

are able to cut materials from mild steel and stainless steel through to highly reflective materials such as copper and aluminium from 1mm to 25mm sheet thickness. “Since the machine has been

installed we’ve been taking advantage of the full thickness range, although on a daily basis we commonly process 6-12mm,” concludes Wherrell. “Offering a TRUMPF-made product presents our sales division with more opportunities to pick up business.”
