service and family values. “It is a country of multiculturalism and harmony, and that is reflected in the way Fijians treat their guests,” she says. “We have sun, sea and sand like many destinations available to UK consumers. But we also offer something extra: an interaction with people and a level of service that is unique in terms of its quality.” Powell says the nation’s love of children also makes it an attractive proposition for family luxury. Kids’ clubs and activities are central to many hotels and resorts on the islands.

GETTING THERE One of Fiji’s biggest historical challenges was the lack of airlift from destinations outside of Australasia and the South Pacific. However, the national carrier, Fiji

Airways, and other international airlines are responding to demand for more seats. Earlier this year Fiji Airways signed an interline agreement with Etihad Airways, giving it access to the Middle Eastern carrier’s burgeoning global network. Codeshares recently agreed with American Airlines and Alaska Airlines mean there are a number of new nonstop services to Nadi, the capital, from US hubs. Similar agreements with Air New Zealand and Cathay Pacific have increased traffic from Los Angeles and Hong Kong, respectively. Fiji Airways announced a five-year

plan at the expo, including an order for six Airbus A330s and five Boeing 737s for long-haul services. The Fijian government will also invest £30 million to upgrade the international airport in Nadi.
